The industry is expected to expand by another 3,000 this year.
Metal grates can be a source of noise, odours and fumes that can damage your home or property, and can also be dangerous for people who use them.
In 2017, there were more than 2,300 metal grate incidents in B.C. alone.
In Victoria alone, there have been more than 30 incidents.
The B.I.C.’s Ministry of Environment and Parks, which regulates the metal grate industry, estimates that the industry generates more than $500 million annually in revenue and employs more than 50,000 people.
“The B.P.O. and the industry have been working together on a number of solutions,” said Lisa Smith, a spokeswoman for the ministry.
“The BPI and the metal grating industry are working together to provide a more efficient and effective approach to protecting our homes, businesses and public spaces from potential metal grates hazards.”
Smith said metal grated objects will be replaced with safer metal or stainless steel solutions if a problem arises.
“We want to ensure that all of our customers, as well as anyone who is using the grates, have access to the best product and we want to continue to work with the industry to make sure that this is achieved,” she said.
Smith said the BPI will also work with local governments and communities to promote safety for metal grate users.
The ministry has also launched a public education campaign on the risks of metal grate use and its environmental impacts.
“Our focus is to ensure the safety of our members and customers,” Smith said.
The campaign includes educational materials, posters and a public awareness campaign.
Smith also said the ministry has launched an online petition calling on B.D. Howe to ban metal graters.
The province of B.A. will also be working with metal grate companies to ensure their customers have access and can be assured that their equipment is safe.
The metal grate issue is a new one for the B.B.C., and the province is considering other measures to address its metal grater industry, said Smith.
“We have been taking steps to make certain that people have access, that the safety measures are there and that they are protected,” Smith told the B-C News Network.
The BPE is also working with the BDI and the BPC to ensure metal grators can be reused, Smith said, adding that the province plans to introduce legislation to make it easier to reuse metal grats.
The province has also been working with other industries to ensure people can have access for their own uses.
Smith noted that BPI members are responsible for maintaining their metal gratin systems and equipment.
“As an industry, we are working with our members to ensure they have access,” she explained.
“If a customer comes in and they are in distress and there is a metal grate in their home, we would encourage them to get help.”
